Boo Hoo
Staring a new job feels like entering a new high school. Who will introduce themselves to me first? Will the cool kids like me? Who will eat lunch with me?
In Victoria’s Secret Hiding Place, I discovered undergarments. Today, I practically peed in them.
It was my last day at a long term care facility I had worked at for 4 months. This position was my first recreation therapy job post University, so I was feeling particularly sentimental.
The newly hired recreation therapist joined me to get the lay of the land. We covered the dull things first: paperwork, supplies and the budget. We then moved on to the most important things: where to find coffee, snacks and the residents.
As we entered a 99 year old’s room, the flawless voice of Justin Bieber reached our ears.
I commented on his music of choice stating, “you’re listening to what all the young girls are listening to these days.”
He giggled and made it clear that it was not his pick as he motioned to hold my hand.
I introduced him to the other recreation therapist and explained it was my last day. His bottom lip began to tremble and tears formed in his eyes.
I had always enjoyed my time with him, but had not been expecting such a reaction. (I would have bet on it being the other way around).
When I leaned in closer to touch his arm and comfort him, he yelled, “BOO!”
I squealed and leaped backwards. He began to shake with laughter.
Once I caught my breath I said, “my, you scared me! You tricked me with the tears!”
With confidence he replied, “yeah, I know I’m good.”
While we embraced in a farewell hug, I’m positive he could feel my heart still pounding.
While exiting the room I said to the other recreation therapist, “I cannot believe I just screamed.”
She replied, “I can’t believe I didn’t!”
I guess the job was like high school too… silly boys, flushed cheeks and embarrassing moments.
P.S. the beautiful flowers in the picture are from the amazing Therapy Aide who had to put up with my nonsense for many months!

This is so cute, seniors are definitely one of my favorite populations to work with 🙂

I agree Lynn. It’s so nice to see the seniors who live life to the fullest and strive to have fun!
